What reaches the exported file's text layer

Whether numbered headings, bullet glyphs and decorative marks break a résumé parser is the question people ask about a design that looks designed. Each line is the output of a gate in the repository, run against the real exporter:

• All 75 designs export a text layer that matches the app's own "what an ATS sees" preview word for word: nothing missing, nothing added, nothing out of order.
• Decoration is painted as vector outlines and never becomes text. That is the same measurement read the other way: the file carries no word the content does not have, so a rule, a monogram or a heading numeral cannot turn up in the middle of a sentence.
• The two designs that print running numbers beside their section headings export those headings as SUMMARY and EXPERIENCE. Not one numeral of the running count reaches the text layer.
• Every list marker does reach the text layer, on the same line as the words it belongs to: 623 markers across the 75 designs, none stranded on a line of its own — so a list copied out of the file is still a list.
• On all 17 two-column designs the main column is written before the sidebar, so a parser reads the name before the skills list, and a vertical line separates the two columns with no text straddling it.
• A line a reader can see always has text to select at that same place, which is the fault where a wrapped heading is painted as outlines with nothing behind it: 3,523 visible lines were checked for it and none showed it.
• The file declares its language, carries a tagged structure tree in reading order, and names an sRGB output intent.

Questions

How do I know my data is really private?

Because you can check. CVAurum runs entirely in your browser — your resume is stored locally and never sent anywhere. There's no account, no server, and no analytics. Open your browser's network tab and you'll see zero outbound requests, even for fonts, which we self-host.

If it's free and open source, what's the catch?

There isn't one. CVAurum is open source under the AGPL-3.0 and the full source is on GitHub. There's no paid tier, no export paywall, and no data to monetize because we never collect any. Fork it, self-host it, or run it offline forever.

Is the ATS score real, or AI guesswork?

It's deterministic, not a guess. The same resume and job description always produce the same score, and it shows exactly which keywords matched and which are missing — so you can fix your resume with confidence.

Where is my data stored?

Only in your browser, using local storage. Nothing is sent anywhere. Clear your browser data and it's gone — so use Backup to keep a copy.

Will my résumé pass ATS scans?

The exported PDF and Word files use real, selectable text (not an image), and there's a built-in ATS check that scores structure and keyword coverage against a job description.

Do numbered headings, bullet glyphs and decorative marks break ATS parsing?

Not here, and the answer is measured rather than assumed. Decoration is painted as vector outlines, so it never becomes text: the two designs that print a running number beside each heading export those headings as SUMMARY and EXPERIENCE, with no numeral in the text at all. Across all 75 designs the exported text layer matches the app's own "what an ATS sees" preview word for word — nothing missing, nothing added, nothing out of order — which also means the file carries no word your content does not have. Bullet markers are the deliberate exception: each one is real text sitting on the same line as its sentence (623 of them across the 75 designs, none stranded alone on a line), so a list you copy out of the PDF is still a list.

Can I move my résumé to another computer?

Yes. Export a full backup (one file) or a single JSON Resume file, then import it in any browser.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There's no sign-up, no email, and no login — open CVAurum and start editing immediately. Most builders make you register before you can even see the editor; CVAurum never does.

What's the difference between a CV and a resume?

A resume is a concise, one-to-two page summary tailored to a specific job (common in the US). A CV is a longer, comprehensive record of your academic and professional history (standard in academia and much of Europe). CVAurum builds both — pick a compact template for a resume, or add sections for a full CV.

Are the links in my PDF clickable?

Yes, by default — they are real clickable regions in the file, not underlined words. Each link also keeps its display text separate from its destination, so it can read Portfolio or Verify while pointing anywhere: a project can carry several named links, and a certification or award can end its line with a short Verify (printed as small tags, or as plain words if you prefer) — with an issuer badge beside the name if you add one. Where a link prints as a word, that word is also the control — click it on the page and the same card opens. The Word file and the ATS preview say the same thing the page does, and Word gets real hyperlinks. If you are printing on paper or submitting somewhere a live link is unwelcome, one switch in Design turns clickability off while keeping the text.

Can I edit on my phone?

Yes, on the page and in the form panel. The page is editable on a phone too (every control gets a finger-sized hit area and the zoom reaches 300%), and the panel is the comfortable route on a small screen — everything the canvas offers is reachable there: contact icons, section heading links, and each section's full style sheet (heading style, skills layout, badge size and shape, bullets) opens as a bottom sheet. Nothing scrolls sideways, and your work syncs to the same resume you edit on a laptop.

What file formats can I download?

A crisp vector PDF with real, selectable text; an editable Word (.docx) that mirrors your template; and the open JSON Resume format. Every export is free and unlimited — no paywall, no watermark.

Is the PDF archival quality?

Yes — and accessible. Every export conforms to both PDF/A-2B (the ISO standard for long-term archiving, with all fonts and an sRGB colour profile embedded) and PDF/UA-1 (the accessibility standard), checked against the veraPDF reference validator. It is fully tagged, so a screen reader reads your headings, paragraphs and bullet lists as real structure — in logical order, so your name comes first even on sidebar layouts.

Is the text on my résumé easy to read for everyone?

Yes, and it is measured rather than assumed. Every design’s text meets WCAG 2.2 AA contrast at its defaults, checked on the exported PDF against what each word actually stands on — coloured headers, bands, gradients, art and cards included. If a colour you choose falls short, a chip over the page says so, names the setting responsible and offers the nearest colour that passes everywhere that setting paints; nothing changes until you click.

How long should my resume be?

For most roles, one page — two if you have 10+ years of experience. Magic fit sizes type and spacing to the page count you pick (one, two or three) inside rules you set, such as a body size it never goes below and sizes it must keep as set, and tells you exactly what it chose; live page-break guides show where you stand, and Suggest measures a few moves that would fit better.

Templates

75 designs, every one exporting real selectable text, each on its own page. The Signature collection changes the structure of the page, not only its colours:

• Broadsheet: A front page: the name set huge in a display serif across the full width, a byline of contacts between double rules, and numbered running heads down one column.
• Marquee: A poster: the name fills a colour block in tall condensed capitals, the body runs in one column beneath, and skills and languages live in a dark strip along the foot of the page.
• Atlas: A dashboard: a navy-to-teal band carries the name, and beneath it a numbers band of figures the app reads out of the content itself (years, companies, projects, a headline figure), each tile editable.
• Chronicle: A ledger: every entry hands its opening year to a tinted rail down the left, set in tall condensed numerals, while the entry keeps its own dates in a plain column beside them; any entry can set its own year and word.
• Folio Noir: A gallery wall: gold on near-black, a band of art behind the name, a hairline running out of every heading, and each entry’s dates and places set in a narrow margin down the right.
• Terrace: Three steps of green carry the name, the role and the contacts across the top, and beneath them every section title sits in a column of its own, beside the words it labels.
• Flare: A signal flare down the margin: an orange spine on every page, the name in a constructed display face under a small letterhead line, numbered heads, square orange marks and a quiet name-and-page line at the foot.
• Dossier: Stencil and typewriter: a letterhead line over a stencilled name, the role stamped in a box, numbered stencil heads, a > before every point, and everything else in a typewriter mono.
• Keystone: A framed page: ivory paper inside a gold hairline on every page, the name in a tall condensed display face over a plum rule and a gold one, plum heads with a gold line running out from each, and gold diamonds for every point.
• Meridian: A quiet masthead: the name in a geometric display face across a near-black band the width of the page, the role in a bright green mono line, and eyebrow heads - a short green bar before each tracked word - with generous air between.
• Schematic: An engineering drawing: blueprint blue on a faint drafting grid on every page, a ruled strip over a name drawn in outline, the role on a dimension line, and red outline numerals before bold tracked heads.
• Volta: A charge of cobalt: a band across the top carrying the letterhead line, the name in a bold geometric display face, a ruled band of numbers drawn from your content, cobalt numerals before display heads, and every date set in the display face.
• Punch: Loud on purpose: the name set huge and bold over a heavy black rule, the role in neon capitals, every section title a black bar with a neon stripe and a neon numeral, and neon squares for every point.
